With the VS100, we present an innovative device for determining the volume—and consequently the density—of ribbons from compaction processes used in pharmaceutical tablet production.

The device was developed in cooperation with the pharmaceutical development unit of Boehringer Ingelheim specifically for the requirements of the pharmaceutical industry.
The VS100 is capable of capturing typical ribbon sizes of up to approx. 50 x 100 mm with a grid resolution of around 50 µm within a few seconds and determining their volume with high precision and without destruction. This enables its use for real-time process control (PAT). Compared to current standard methods, the VS100 demonstrates superior performance in precision, robustness, and measurement time.
In the recently published work “Laser triangulation as a fast and reliable method for determining ribbon solid fraction; focus on accuracy, precision, and measurement time” by T. Lillotte et al. in the International Journal of Pharmaceutics, Volume 610, 15 December 2021, the VS100 was compared with other common measurement methods for ribbon volume determination in terms of accuracy, usability, and measurement duration.
A 3D visualization of the sample provides an additional reference against the physical specimen.
The acquired data, measurement reports (PDF), and audit trails can be stored directly in databases and are immediately available to the user for subsequent processes.
